Meet Roger Wheelock, the Community Shaman
Offering shamanic healing sessions online and in Asheville, NC
Since I was a young man, I’ve been interested in faith traditions and indigenous cultures from around the world, but I was specifically called to shamanism through a deeply personal experience.
After guiding my elderly mother through a healing process known as recapitulation over the last years of her life, I became serious about my studies and helping to support others.
Since then I've spent over a decade deepening my practice through apprenticeship with Quechua elders and practitioners. I am a pampamesayok paqo, a designation that reflects genuine initiation into the healing traditions of the Quechua people of the high Andes, descendants of the Incas.
Shamanism is a spiritual practice that’s one of the oldest forms of healing in the world, and I believe it should be accessible to anyone in need of it—so I created Community Shaman. Here, sessions are available to anyone who is called to walk through the door, whatever your background, whatever you can pay. This work is for you, offered humbly in service.
I'm based in Asheville, NC, and I offer services both in person and remotely. I’m looking forward to connecting with you!

A few answers to some top questions

What is shamanic healing?
Shamanic healing is one of the oldest healing traditions in the world. At its heart, it's based on the understanding that we are more than our thoughts and our bodies: we have a spiritual dimension, and that's often where the roots of what's hurting us actually live. A shamanic practitioner works in the spiritual dimension on your behalf, helping to clear what's blocking you, restore what's been lost, and open up what's been closed off.
Specifically, I’m trained in the Quechua tradition of Colcha, Peru, and have been granted the standing of pampamesayok paqo.
How is shamanic healing different from other spiritual or energy practices?
Practices like reiki or energy work involve healing transmissions, while things like tarot and other divination arts are about receiving insight or guidance.
But as a shamanic practitioner, I work in the spiritual dimension on your behalf and work with what I find there. It’s more about healing and restoring wholeness than offering insight or information.
Shamanic healing also asks something of you in return, because it involves co-creation. Restoring your connection to your wholeness, to nature, and to Spirit does what thinking alone can’t do. And then you take that—the new possibilities, the unlocked imagination, the parts of yourself that have come back to life—and go out into the world and do something with it. You create the life you want consciously through thought and action.
How do I know you’re the real thing?
It's a fair question. The word "shaman" gets used quite loosely these days, but becoming a shaman isn’t something you can learn from a book or a title you can bestow upon yourself. It takes years of genuine study, relationship, and apprenticeship with master Paqos (the Peruvian word for shaman) who carry these traditions.
I am considered a pampamesayok paqo, a designation that reflects over ten years of continuing apprenticeships and initiations into the healing techniques of the Quechua, descendants of the Incas. For brevity and general awareness, though, “shaman” or “shamanic practitioner” work just fine!
Does this involve plant medicine or altered states?
No, the work I do does not involve plant medicine of any kind. I don’t personally advise on the use of entheogens such as ayahuasca, and the services I provide don’t involve any drugs or journeying. There may be incense, burning of sage and palo santo, or sprinkling Florida Water, but that’s it!
Do you work with people of all backgrounds and identities?
Absolutely. I see and honor you in your full humanity, and you are welcome here. Part of what I try to create in every session is a safe space where you can give voice to your own experiences and be deeply heard. In your session, you can say what’s really true for you, and feel like you belong. In my experience, even that alone can be powerful enough to shift something.
Where are you located?
I'm based in Asheville, NC, and I offer shamanic healing both online and in-person from my office in the Community Wellness Collaborative (Haw Creek Commons, 315 Old Haw Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28805).
Do you offer shamanic healing online?
Yes! I offer Cleansings and Illuminations virtually via Zoom, so you can be located anywhere in the world and still receive shamanic healing in this way.
(At this time, Ceremony Officiating, Divinations, and Soul Retrievals are only available in person in Asheville, NC.)
How much do sessions cost?
The full rate for a session is $125. Sliding scale rates are available at $60, $80, and $100. This work is for you, offered humbly in service, and is available whatever you can pay. Nobody is turned away because of price.
